When I became a mother for the first time 15 years ago, there was not that many flat panel televisions on the market. They were not available everywhere and were not considered the standard television type in most people’s homes. Fast forward to now and more than one flat screen television can be found in anyone’s home.
Amongst the many concerns with having twins or multiples is that there are more than one child (often same height and weight) that like to do things at the same time. Having twin boys, I was worried about them climbing on furniture and pulling things on themselves by accident. A 2011 US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report on flat panel TV safety revealed:
- A child is killed every three weeks from an unsecured TV
- Every 45 minutes a child visits an emergency room due to a TV tip-over related injury·
- Between 2000 and 2011, 215 fatalities have resulted from TV tip-over
- An estimated 17,000 people each year, the majority of which are children, are treated for injuries from TV tip-overs
- Reported cases have increased almost 25% from 2006 to 2010, and over the last 10 years, injuries have increased by 31%
Most parents are unaware of the safety risks that flat panel TVs pose for kids. Due to increasing size and new ultra thin designs, today’s flat panel TVs can easily tip over when bumped or pulled, toppling off of furniture and causing injury or even death. Bringing this risk to the forefront, SANUS, the leading designer and manufacturer of flat panel TV wall mounts, has partnered with Safe Kids Worldwide. By educating consumers on the risk of unsecured flat panel TV’s, SANUS and Safe Kids Worldwide offer safe solutions for families across the nation by reducing TV tip-over related injuries and fatalities.
Some of the features SANUS television mounts have that are helpful for parents are:

I remember a horrific story from my son’s toddler play group…a little girl had climbed up on her dresser & the dresser & her TV all toppled on her. Thankfully, she was not killed but she was very seriously injured with permanent brain damage. It’s important to have wall mounts.

When I was a child a tv fell on me, luckily I didn’t get hurt. It scares me daily that our tv in the playroom is not mounted. My little guy is a very active 3 year old and it is very dangerous for him.

It is important because kids are unpredictable and it is better to be safe than sorry…..so MOUNT that tv!

Because kids climb all over when you aren’t looking or turn away for a minute.

My TV is huge, if it fell on my daughter, I could only imagine how injured she would be. 🙁 I think safety when it comes to TVs is so important, kids pull them down, kick whatever they are on… the list goes on. TVs are so heavy and dangerous!

It would be dangerous having a TV that a toddler could easily pull down on themselves. A TV mount is important especially in the case of toddlers.
Nicki Joseph says
With having little children they could easily go up and knock/hit/pound on the tv and it would be so scary if it fell over onto them.
Breanne says
So the tv doesn’t fall over on the kid
Ultimo says
Thanks for sharing, it’s a big concern to make sure the TV is mounted properly for people who have kids.
