Greetings friends! My name is Christine and I’m a parent of three great kids. My oldest, Samantha, made me a Grandmother this year—I still can’t believe it! She’s a wonderful mom, wife, and I love that we’re so close.
I have a sixteen-year-old son named Richie who is funny, charming, tall, handsome and happens to have autism. I have a step-son named Tiki who is bright, handsome and has a caring heart. I’m married to the love of my life, Kirk. We are a blended family. I’m Puerto Rican and my husband is Jamaican. In our home there is always good food, good music, and good vibes!
Being a special needs parent led me to dedicating my life to serving as a special needs advocate for members of the disability community (for over ten years). I’m a believer of increasing student achievement with meaningful parent involvement practices. I’m the founder and blogger of Sensory Friends, a site dedicated to promoting inclusion and helping special needs families participate more in recreational and community activities.
I’m a lover of literature, so I’m either reading a book or writing thought provoking materials. I love to cook and explore the cuisines of different cultures. I’ve mastered Latino, Italian and many native Jamaican dishes, now I’m thinking about Indian and Thai food dishes!
I’m a big fan of volunteerism and I’m a board member of the Autism Society of Florida. In addition, I’m a member of several school advisory boards, councils, committees and support groups. I served as a Governor appointed member of the Florida Rehabilitation Council. The Florida Rehabilitation Council are charged with collaborating with Vocational Rehabilitation in helping individuals with disabilities obtain and maintain gainful employment (and this type of agency exits in every state). I was selected by LATISM (Latinos in Tech Innovation and Social Media) as one of the Top Latina Digital Influencers for 2015 and 2016.
I am honored and thrilled to share my experiences in parenting an ASD child and how our family deals with various issues collectively. I hope my resources and experiences provide a semblance of comfort, confidence and inspiration for you to move forward as an informed parent who is not alone.
