The social media space and Hispanics activists have been a buzz the past few days over whether a upcoming Disney TV movie and 2013 series, Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, is truly a “Latina” princess.
NBC Latino helped breaked the story into mainstream media and “gathered reactions from some top Latina mom bloggers” (including us here at Mami of Multiples) at http://nbclatino.com/2012/10/19/disneys-first-latina-princess-mom-bloggers-respond/.
Here are our thoughts….
What are your thoughts about Sofia?

I think it’s a step forward. The one thing that everyone else forgets is that Latinos come in the spectrum of the rest of the population so, of course, there will be talks about Sofia not fitting a certain image. Truth be told, you’d have to make up as many more princesses as Disney already has in order to reach every single shade, hue and hair texture.
I say we accept what is currently on the table and hope to see further progress. Not just from Disney but from the very Latino population that is perhaps criticizing this release. Until we are able to open up and admit our own sterotypes, racism, colorism, hairism, etc we can’t expect the world to embrace all that it means to be Latino.

Sili, you took the words out of my mouth! If we’re going to get demand Disney create Princesses to reflect EVERY shade, hair type, and eye color of Latin women, they’d have to create hundreds of them. It’s a step in the right direction and I say: Thanks Disney!

I am half Cuban and half Italian and I totally agree with your comment on NBC Latino. Its not about the color because within the Latino race are mixed heritages, cultures, skin color, hair color, and eyes. I appreciate Disney trying to connect with the Latino audience. Its not perfect but its a good first step.

Interesting. This is the first I’m hearing of this. Not sure how I missed it earlier. It sounds like a great step forward. and I think girls of all ethnicities should feel like princesses.

I really like that Disney is taking steps to include cultures and groups that haven’t received the “princess” spotlight yet. 😉

I haven\’t seen the movie yet, but I can\’t wait! I will say, I am happy that Disney has decided to jump on the Latino Princesses bandwagon! Totally in agreement with your comment Joscelyn, as I can relate! I am pure Dominican from both sides of my family, I am not fair-skinned but the total opposite, blonde, blue eyes, but once I open my mouth you will know I am a LATINA! The Latino culture is huge with all types of eyes and skin, colors as well as hair type. THIS IS WHAT MAKES US A UNIQUE and ELITE Culture! . I applaud Disney for trying to connect with NOSOTROS!
