A Family That Prays Together Stays Together
That is a saying we hold close to in our home and it has become more than just a saying but a way of life for us. Prayer has always played an instrumental role in my life. My parents are the Prayer Ministers in our home church so I’ve grown up believing in the power of prayer!
When Dan and I got married, we knew that we would be passing down that same legacy of praying to our own children. Our girls see us pray, they hear us pray and in turn they have learned to pray. Our girls will pray over the tiniest boo-boos to finding a parking spot to asking the Lord for help on an upcoming test—all because they believe in the power of prayer. Would you believe that our toddler‘s first word when she was around 6 months old was, “Amen?”
What is prayer? How do you pray? Is there a wrong way to pray?
Prayer is not meant to be complicated, it’s not meant for you to recite words back and forth in hopes that you are saying all the right things, prayer is not one-sided either. See prayer is simply talking to God and also listening to Him. It’s communicating, like you would to a close friend. In order for you to get-to-know that friend you had to open up and share your feelings of what you were going through, right? It’s the same with Jesus. You can freely share all those feelings as well, good or bad—the difference is: He has the answer!
In our home, when life gets complicated and we do not have an answer for each other, we pray. How does that help us? Well for one, we are encouraged through prayer; we hear when we pray out loud what our concerns are–which leads us to come alongside each other even more. There is a closeness that draws us nearer to our Heavenly Father, the bond with us five is stronger, we can withstand anything because we stand united in prayer!
I encourage you to make prayer apart of your family. If you do not know how to even start communicating with Jesus, I leave you with this scripture verse that is found in Luke when Jesus’s disciples asks him, “Lord, teach us to pray.”
Father, Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who sins against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from the evil one
(Luke 11: 2-4)
