As the new school year began, I added another role to my roster of responsibilities when I agreed to teach an Introduction to Spanish (aka Spanish I) course to high school students at my teen son’s small private school. Though the school is diverse, the majority of the students are from a non-Hispanic background and most have not been exposed to the language. Parents and students were eager to have a Spanish class offered at the school. Thankfully, the majority understood the benefit of learning the Spanish language not only for academic enrichment but also as an expertise that would benefit students in college and career plans.
With National Hispanic Heritage Month being officially designated from September 15 – October 15 and having the pleasure to once again team with Procter & Gamble’s Orgullosa program, I saw an opportunity to bring awareness about Hispanic Heritage Month and the Hispanic culture to the Spanish I students.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, the Spanish I students had to create a presentation about a Spanish-language country. Included had to be statistical information about the country (education, family structure, location); an influential famous person or descendant from that country (that influenced culture, sports, music, arts, politics, religion, etc.); popular foods from the country; and extra credit opportunities that included cooking a native dish, dressing in native clothing, singing (or dancing or playing instruments) to Hispanic music, etc.
The students did a good job researching and learning about Spanish-language countries. They were surprised with the information they learned about their respective countries, especially regarding the strong sense of family and religious values within the Hispanic culture (like 2nd or 3rd generation Hispanic families living in the same house), the influential people who have come from or are descendants of a Spanish-country, the impact Hispanic culture has made on the U.S. and of course the various types of Hispanic foods.
(See some of the students’ presentations in the picture slideshow below)
The young ladies in the Spanish I classes had an additional opportunity to relate to Hispanic women (via P&G’s Orgullosa program) by helping showcase how the Latina community is made up of mujeres con la falda bien puesta, (which translates to “women who have their skirts well placed”) and to understand how Orgullosa (translation for proud) is a platform to inspire Latinas (and all women) to celebrate their cultural heritage, while empowering them to reach for their personal life goals through a virtual community.
Orgullosa was created as a digital destination where Latina women can connect, share and inspire each other about their ever-changing and busy lifestyles, including topics ranging from fashion to entrepreneurship. By developing the Board of Faldas, Latina women will now have access to real-life testimonials and advice from women just like themselves, found exclusively on Orgullosa’s Facebook page and Web site (www.orgullosa.com).
Thanks to the Orgullosa the female students received P&G products (like an Orgullosa T-shirt and bookbag and notebook; nail polish; deodorant; lipstick) and learned more about the roles of Hispanic women in culture, family, education and society overall.
(See a video by some of the female students regarding Orgullosa below)

I am not Latino, but my husband is and he has taught me to be strong and proud of who I am. I never realized that I should be proud of myself until he came into my life. I have raised a child, bought my home and am now taking care of my mom. My husband made me realize that these are all things to be proud of. Now, we are very strong together in overcoming our obstacles.

What makes me a strong and proud person is how I carry myself. My grandmother instilled in me how important it was to be proud of my rich heritage from all of our ancestors. She always reminded me that a woman should be strong in mind and spirit and proud of who she is and where she came from.
