As a mother to multicultural children, it’s always been important to me that my children embrace all their roots. My immediate family tree consists of ancestors from Italy, Spain, Cuba and Puerto Rico. My husband’s family has roots in Ireland and Scotland. I have a desire for my children to understand the Spanish language and be able to identify with it. Cooking and eating meals together are a large part of the cornerstone of Latin culture. Family meals give the opportunity to share the values of a family from one generation to the next. They are a wonderful way for children to learn from parents and grandparents about their cultural and ethnic heritage, as foods can help show cultural traditions and customs. Hispanic Heritage Month is a great time to incorporate traditional dishes and to help open up dialogue about cultures and family history.
My Puerto Rican mother and Cuban father are excellent cooks. As a caregiver helper to my parents, I’m the only one from our family that resides near them so BJ’s Wholesale Club is our main shopping destination for everyday grocery savings and ingredients for traditional Hispanic and Latino recipes. With my parents having shared in the household cooking duties throughout my childhood, they have used a variety of Latino and American brands in their meal preparations. Being able to choose from Goya products and BJ’s high-quality, exclusive Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen brands provides an added layer of convenience to be able to find everything we need in one location. Ease is part of the shopping experience at BJ’s. For example, members can choose fresh meats cut to their specifications. BJ’s butchers will recut and repackage at no charge. Plus, Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen brands are backed with a 100% money back guarantee. Members can try any of BJ’s Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen products and return them for a full refund if they aren’t satisfied for any reason. BJ’s offers convenient shopping options including in-Club shopping, BJs.com, the BJ’s mobile app and Shop BJs.com – Pick up in Club.
The exclusive BJ’s brands are also time savers for busy families. Many Latino recipes require fresh ingredients—like produce—and time to prepare those ingredients so it can be added to recipes. However, the time required for preparation (chopping, dicing, etc.) is often not a reality in active households. Without having to sacrifice quality, Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen products are flash-frozen to preserve nutrients and freshness. Meats are fresh packed and frozen ingredients (like Wellsley Farms Chopped Onions and Peppers) still have the farm to table taste.
Even on a simple grocery run, BJ’s members save 25% off grocery store prices every day. Families save an average of $500 per year shopping at BJ’s! BJ’s is the only membership warehouse club to accept manufacturer’s coupons in addition to BJ’s exclusive coupons.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m sharing a brief how-to video below and recipe of a simple family-favorite Cuban dish called Picadillo (Cuban Style Hash). It is an easy weeknight meal, affordable, can be easily modified to taste and all ingredients can be found at BJ’s.
