Do you remember your science class in middle school or receiving your first chemistry set? Did you feel excited to try to create something or try to understand a factual concept? Science helps to open up a sense of imagination, exploring the unknown, causes and effects, truths and facts about space and our environment.
In today’s technological advanced world, there is a great need for students to pursue subjects (and eventually jobs) in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The exponential growth of the Latino community provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the mounting demand for STEM-educated labor and the country’s fastest growing demographic. According to a bevy of national statistics, Hispanics are severely underrepresented in the STEM arena.
The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for middle school students, desires to encourage the STEM pathway to the next generation of Latino leaders.
The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge targets students in the years when research indicates their interest in science begins to fade and encourages them to explore scientific concepts and creatively communicate their findings. 3M and Discovery Education are proud of their continuing commitment to support middle school education by encouraging the next generation of American scientists to excel in science and technology.
What makes the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge Different? The ten challenge finalists will each be paired with a 3M scientist mentor. The mentors will help guide finalists to create an innovation that will be presented to a panel of judges at the final competition at the 3M Innovation Center in October.
Do you have a budding scientist in your family that would be interested in entering the challenge? See the competition timeline below:
*IMPORTANT SUBMISSION DATE* April 21st – Video Entry Deadline – Middle school students are asked to create a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind a possible solution for an everyday problem.
June/July – Ten finalists will be announced and have an exclusive opportunity to work directly with a 3M scientist during a summer mentorship program, during which they were challenged to create an innovation which solves a problem in society. State Merit Winners are also announced at this time.
October – Finalists will demonstrate their scientific innovation and creativity in a series of challenges at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, MN.
The prize is that the winner of the challenge will receive $25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
Past Challenge winners have gone on to speak in front of members of Congress, work with the nation’s top scientists, participate in the White House Science Fair, meet the President and pursue academic careers in the sciences!
