As a child of the 80s I knew about Roseanne Barr, an Emmy Award-winning actress, comedienne and best-selling author, who was the star of her own sitcom, Roseanne. Under my parent’s discretion and since I was a young girl during the 80s, I had only seen a few episodes of Roseanne while it was on the air. Given my age many of the topics on the show were too mature or advanced for my age level. Yet with the frequent commentary about the show on the news, at school and even on cartoons I understood the impact Roseanne was having on television and middle-class America. Many watchers could relate to the everyday struggles of Roseanne and her sitcom family; she was not June Cleaver and neither were the viewers.
As I got older with a family of my own (thanks to Netflix and TVLand) I was able to watch Roseanne and saw real life family issues that were still relevant in today’s society. The episodes, especially the early ones, really showcased a working mom who was struggling to balance a job, motherhood, marriage, household duties, extended family, friends and her own self worth as a woman. One of concepts on the show that I really enjoyed watching was that they ate together at the table as a family….with no technology interruptions.
After a long, self-imposed sabbatical from series television, Roseanne made the decision to manage a fully functional 40-acre macadamia and live stock farm in Hawaii.
