We have all seen the adorable commercials of two young brothers from the Smucker family talking about their favorite jam and jellies from their family’s line of spreads. The feeling of old-fashioned nostalgia, goodness and fresh sweet jams and jellies come alive through the television screen.
For most people, the Smucker’s brand is synonymous with breakfast toast and jelly or the classic peanut butter and jelly lunch for school children. If you follow us online and on Instagram, you know last Fall we were invited (along with a select group of national bloggers) to visit The J.M. Smucker Company headquarters in Orrville, Ohio for their #HolidayTips event.
In the early 19th century, John Chapman, or “Johnny Appleseed,” wandered the Ohio countryside, sowing apple seeds and securing a place in American history.
It was from the fruit of Johnny Appleseed’s trees that Orrville, Ohio, resident Jerome Monroe Smucker first pressed cider at a mill he opened in 1897. Later, he also prepared apple butter, which he sold from the back of a horse-drawn wagon. Each crock bore a hand-signed seal as his personal guarantee of quality.
Before long, J.M. Smucker’s name became well known in its own right, as residents throughout the region — and eventually the nation — came to associate the Smucker’s® brand name with wholesome, high-quality fruit products.
Much like Johnny Appleseed’s trees, The J.M. Smucker Company has strong roots that have allowed it to grow and prosper throughout the last 115 years. Today, Smucker’s products can be found in homes and restaurants throughout the world.

To check the quality of brewed coffee, a technique that is used is called “cupping”? Smucker’s has “Master Tasters” to ensure that coffee beans and grain packages (like Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee at Home) are shipped at their peak and best quality.
Coffee cupping, or coffee tasting, is the practice of observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee. It is a professional practice but can be done informally by anyone or by professionals known as “Master Tasters”. A standard coffee cupping procedure involves deeply sniffing the coffee, then loudly slurping the coffee so it spreads to the back of the tongue. The coffee taster attempts to measure aspects of the coffee’s taste, specifically the body (the texture or mouthfeel, such as oiliness), sweetness (the perceived sweetness at the sides of the tongue), acidity (a sharp and tangy feeling at the tip of the tongue, like when biting into an orange), flavour (the characters in the cup), and aftertaste. Since coffee beans embody telltale flavours from the region where they were grown, cuppers may attempt to identify the coffee’s origin.
