As a mother to multicultural children, its always been important to me that my children embrace all of their heritage roots. My family tree alone consists of Italy, Spain, Cuba and Puerto Rico just to name a few. I have a desire for my children to understand the Spanish language and be able to identify with it. My oldest already started his new school year as a 10th grader and I am teaching Spanish I to the high school students at his Christian private school. Since I am always on the search for ways to incorporate Spanish and the culture for my family, I was glad to get a to learn about Bebe Lanugo.
The idea of Lanugo was born in Miami in the year 2011, while one of the founders Carla Curiel, was pregnant with her twins girls, Adriana & Emilia. Carla, who is Dominican, had moved permanently to the United States 5 years before when she married “su media naraja,” Roberto Castro. She always assumed that she would raise her kids in her hometown Santo Domingo with the same values, culture and traditions that she grew up with pero como dice su abuela, “el hombre propone y Dios dispone.”
While pregnant, Carla started constantly wondering how she would pass on some of her culture to her girls, and in one of her many baby-focused shopping sprees, she realized the need for for high-quality design kid-oriented products in Spanish that highlight the richness of our Hispanic culture and support Mamás like her that understand the challenges of raising nuestros hijos bilingues, and who see the value of passing on ‘nuestros valores.’
Through fun, light-hearted, and some religious sayings and designs, the Lanugo world and characters highlight different culture traits and traditions such as nuestros dichos y refranes, food, music, culture, and even our positive stereotypes like the protective Mamá Latina or the charming Latin gentleman, which make the Latin culture so encantadora, vivid and rich.
Bebe Lanugo is more than just clothing, decor and tote bags, its a resource for families to incorporate and embrace their Hispanic traditions, lifestyle and beliefs into their everyday living. Currently, Bebe Lanugo has an opportunity to bring their message to a national audience with Walmart’s Get On the Shelf contest.
