For most families, the holiday season is one of happiness, but also a lot of busyness. Within the Thanksgiving Day holiday alone, we have our wedding anniversary, the twins’ birthday and celebrating Thanksgiving Day – all occurring within the same week. The calendar becomes busy with holiday parties, holiday functions at school, church activities, seasonal events, shopping etc.
During the holiday season, Latin-inspired traditional meals are a special part of the holiday season. In addition to turkey and ham, it’s customary with my family to see Cuban black beans, pernil (roasted pork) and Puerto Rican pinon (beef and plantain casserole) on the table among the holiday meals.
To help kick-off the holidays, we have partnered with Florida Dairy Farmers (& Leche De Florida – FDF’s Spanish language website) as a Florida Dairy Farmers Holiday Ambassador.
About Florida Dairy Farmers
Florida Dairy Farmers is Florida’s milk promotion group, working to enhance the image of the dairy farming industry and increase milk and dairy product sales statewide via education and marketing. FDF is one of 18 member organizations of the United Dairy Industry Association and carries out the programs of Dairy Management Inc., the umbrella organization based in Chicago, Ill. For more information, call 407-647-8899 or visit www.floridamilk.com.

In the midst of the busyness preparing for Thanksgiving (and the rest of the holiday season), staying healthy and having much-needed energy are a priority. No one wants to be ill during Thanksgiving or the holidays and not be able to experience the festive activities.
Check out the following 3 easy tips to help you get ready for Thanksgiving:
Eat a Protein Packed Breakfast – Its very easy to skip over breakfast in the rush of the morning but it really is the most important meal of the day. Eating a mix of nutrient-rich foods is the key to a healthy breakfast and to preventing a mid-morning energy slump (especially when preparing the turkey in the early morning hours)! Eating these foods allows you to get the most vitamins, minerals and other nutrients (without too many calories) from the foods you choose. Nutrient-rich breakfast foods include low-fat or non-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. For example, try these double protein enriched pancakes shown in the video below.
Ask for Help Ask family and friends to pitch in a few days before Thanksgiving to help with the preparation. From grocery shopping to decorating, a lot of work occurs before even starting to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal. An extra set of hands to help babysit children so you can go shopping without distractions or having someone set & dress the Thanksgiving table or prep ingredients beforehand (cutting, dicing, chopping, etc.) does help to lighten the workload.
Be Creative With Your Menu & Leftovers Instead of the same old turkey with mayo on sliced bread, use your tasty turkey leftovers to create sandwiches that are fun to eat. Shred turkey on crusty French bread and add fig marmalade or better yet, some of the leftover cranberry relish. Forget the bread altogether, chop turkey and make Day after Thanksgiving Turkey Croquettes. Try a new spin on a Thanksgiving side dish and dessert with Puré de Yuca con Queso Alpine Cheddar and Pastel Tres Leches de Calabaza.

I learned that a lot of the farmers are second or third generation farmers! That the farms have been in their families for years. I find that very interesting and I love how involved the whole family is!
