Being a military servicemember is a unique #ToughIs life-goal that requires much strength, bravery, dedication, honor, loyalty and service to the United States. Being a military servicemember and parent requires an undeniable will of strength, character and sacrifice for not only the servicemember but also their families – that is a true definition of what #ToughIs to me.
Any military family can understand the honor, respect, and many struggles that occur when a solider is deployed. The spouse (or family member) remaining at home become the sole provider and manager of the entire household. The deployed solider does not only have to be focused on their (often dangerous) job in another country but also carries the worry of how life is progressing back at home without them.
Throughout my high-risk pregnancy of my twin boys, my husband was on overseas deployment and I volunteered for the Army National Guard’s FRG (Family Readiness Group).
Part of the FRG’s mission was to help keep the families of the deployed soldiers connected with information, assistance and resources. We had setup a phone and email list to keep family members engaged especially for those that could not make it to the monthly meetings. It was always a humbling and awe-inspiring experience to be able to witness first-hand the strength of the deployed military members and their families.
Due to their tactical objectives, deployed soldiers could be found in high-risk and dangerous overseas areas. Their focus has to be on the mission at hand. Though soldiers always worry, they have to remain focused on their mission so they can try to return safely back home.
Stateside families forged ahead (often without the support of extended family) to take care of children, school, working, paying bills, managing the household and trying to keep the family on track while their solider was deployed. The consistent strength of a military family and the fortitude of solider is constantly tested…when the unexpected happens, when an emergency occurs, when the heartbreak of an injury to a solider occurs and now life-long medical struggles makes family living never the same again.
